A view of Hirado, #Japan, the reigning champion of “hometown taxation.” The program allows people to make tax-deductible donations to any municipality, regardless of where they live. Known as furusato nozei, it is an attempt by the government in Tokyo to address regional wealth disparities. Taxpayers who donate to Hirado get a nice deduction and a shipment of slipper lobsters, spiral-shelled mollusks and oysters. For the seafood-averse, the city has hundreds of other thank-you gifts: a monthly vegetable delivery, a fold-up electric bike or a wedding photo shoot with formal wear and hotel stay included.
