More than 200 surfers descended on Gilgo Beach, near Babylon on Long Island, to compete in the second annual East Coast surfing championships in September 1963. @ニューヨーク・タイムズ noted the occasion with an explainer of sorts about the sport. “For the uninitiated, heavies are sets of extra-large waves,” the paper reported. “When the surfer sees a heavy, he becomes stoked, which means enthusiastic about the surfing conditions.” The story went on to define wetsuits, “gremmies” (novices) and “hodads” — “a hanger-on, a surf bum, a person who would like to surf but doesn’t have the nerve.” Barton Silverman, who photographed sports for @ニューヨーク・タイムズ for five decades, took this photo. This long weekend, we’re sharing photos from our #archives. #nytweekender
