Fear knots up his stomach as he marches forward, loaded down by his heavy uniform, his high boots, and his helmet, jammed down on his head. He comes from far away, and he feels lost here. Each day, as he goes out on a search mission, he sees a procession of foreign sights: strange, unfamiliar mountains and valleys; veiled women; long-bearded men wearing robes; small, dirty children who scream “America, America” at him as he passes by. America, his America - the land of his pals, his girlfriend, his McDonald’s - is very far away. He is a fighter as well as a victim. He doesn’t understand what the people here are saying. He shouts louder to make himself heard. He sees the fear in their eyes; sometimes, he sees contempt, hatred, too. He marches on. Following orders, he flies over dangerous, sensitive areas by helicopter and lands in new locations, where he conducts more patrols. He goes from one tribal zone to another, from one valley to another. He searches villages, caves, houses, people, always on the lookout for a terrorist, the invisible enemy of his distant homeland. His mission done for the day, he goes back to the base. He meets up with the other soldiers in his platoon, his companions. He watches video games to kill time. He is waiting for an official letter from over there, his far-off country - the letter that will release him and permit him to go back home. The next day, following orders once again, he goes back out into the dust of this desert country. He heads out on another search mission, his 20-year-old body worn out by the continual danger and the risk of dying.
