Photograph by George Steinmetz @geosteinmetz / @thephotosociety Fire dance in the mountains near Rabaul, New Guinea, puts to rest the spirits of the recently deceased. Dancers put the possessions of the dead on the bonfire and kick burning wood into the air in a nightlong ceremony of dancing and chanting to the beat of bamboo poles on wooden benches. This ceremony is held only once or twice a year. On this night there were some sixty male fire-dancers, and they had made a sport of it by aiming the flying (burning) logs at the foreigner with a camera. #ShootAndRun #PapuaNewGuinea
