In 2011, twenty-five years after the world’s worst nuclear disaster in Chernobyl, the Ukrainian government officially legalized tourism to the Exclusion Zone. In Pripyat, visitors get to wander through the debris-strewn corridors and empty classrooms of a school. Hundreds of discarded gas masks litter the floor of a canteen. One tourist brought his own gas mask, not to protect himself from radiation, but simply for photographs and laughs.
My 20-year retrospective photo book, "The Long Shadow of Chernobyl," was just named one of the best photo books of the year in the PDN Annual. To see more: http://www.gerdludwig.com/?p=4168
