Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | A long, steep “stairway to hell” connected this French WWI underground city to thetrenches above. Soldiers would appear out of nowhere to fight in the trenches and later disappear back into the earth as if they had vanished into thin air.

WWI underground cities were deep enough that the powerful canon shells of the day could not penetrate. They were places where soldiers on both sides could feel human while war raged on surface.
