Fog covered this hillside when I arrived just before sunset. But the fog lifted while there was still enough light to capture this haunting moment. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers on both sides died in the battles of Verdun. During WWI, at places like this, the world first discovered the horror of modern mass destruction where the killing power of high tech weaponry devoured human lives at rate far beyond human comprehension then or now.
