Photograph @massimobassanoA fin whale softly swim close to my zodiac at Faial island in Azores. It always amazes me to see this giant animals swimming quietly as she could be a little cat. I've seen all over the World but anytime it's like the first. After many years of whale hunting, and I can say, even if it's sad, ecological hunting because azorians never used big ship and cannons, but always small boats, paddling behind the whales and using harpoon. With lots of risks for the crew, in fact azorians had the highest number of dead during hunting. Now, Azores one of the most important area to observe whales. A Sanctuary of whale watching. Perfect tribute to the wonderful animals to protect. The fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus), also called the finback whale, razorback, or common rorqual, is a marine mammal belonging to the suborder of baleen whales. It is the second largest animal after the blue whale, growing to 27.3 metres (89.5 ft) long and weighing nearly 74 tonnes (73 long tons; 82 short tons). The American naturalist Roy Chapman Andrews called the fin whale "the greyhound of the sea... for its beautiful, slender body is built like a racing yacht and the animal can surpass the speed of the fastest ocean steamship.#azores #whale #finwhale #whalewatching #atlantic #portugal@ナショナルジオグラフィック
