First impressions are tough and often right.
Anytime I arrive somewhere new I am always thinking “what is it I am going to say about this place? What do I know, or think I know that I will try to put into an image?” In Havana last week this is almost the first picture I made, a confusing jumble of reflections in a bus window that to an American eye seem not just out of place but completely out of time. After a week there I am not sure if that first impression is correct, but I am certain now of how little I understand of the place. As Cubans tell visitors, “Come to our Island, Enjoy it but don’t expect to understand.”
