In August 2014, Hidya Atash overlooked the destruction in Shejaiya from the top floor of her home. That summer, the photographer @heidi_levine spent 40 days in #Gaza, documenting the aftermath of the recent Israeli bombardment. “Every day I went out to photograph I thought the next day could not possibly be worse but somehow it was,” she said. “It was endless and shocking.” For her work in Gaza, she won the Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism Award, which was created to honor the Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer who was killed last year while working in Afghanistan.
