Following guides, @PaulSalopek walks into the desert on day 19 of @NatGeo @outofedenwalk in the #Afar region of Northeast #Ethiopia, as he follows in the footsteps of our collective humanities walk out of Africa that began some 60,000 years ago. Pleased to announce that beginning today I’ve joined @NatGeoCreative for representation in commercial assignments and image licensing. In addition, I’m bringing my entire archive — 14 stories from more than a decade with National Geographic magazine — over to NatGeo Creative, expanding my collaboration with the Society, sharing more loudly the passions for education, awareness on the issues facing all of us today and into the future. Looking forward to dancing with the talented team lead by Maura Mulvihill and the likes of @alicebrkeating, @ginamartindc and more. Above is a photograph from my 9th story with the National Geographic, published in the December 2013 edition, titled #OurGreatestJourney, part I of the Out of Eden Walk project. Having spent many days following Paul and his camels through the desert in the Afar region of Ethiopia, it was time to bid my friend and colleague adieu — the Out of Eden Walk is not a photo essay nor project about Paul. Rather, it is a deeply layered narrative about all of us: Who we were. Who we are. Where we are going. This photograph of Paul as evening approached was made on the outskirts of #Logiya as he wandered off into the desert. It became the cover image for the December issue. To me, it symbolizes how our ancestors may have left on foot along the pathway of our shared migration, carrying the few items we needed on what was truly — and still is — our greatest journey.
