'Madrid has many parks, but the city’s crown jewel is El Parque del Buen Retiro, often simply referred to as El Retiro. The Palacio de Cristal (or Glass Palace) pictured here stands at the center of this grand and beautiful park. Built in 1887, this large pavilion originally displayed plants brought back from Spanish colonies, particularly the Philippines. Today, it hosts temporary exhibits of modern art curated by Madrid’s Museo Reina Sofía. The real attraction, though, is the building itself and the way the light streams through it like a prism.'
