Severe Tropical Cyclone Pam continues to strengthen just east of Vanuatu on Thursday morning (local time) and is now a very powerful cyclone with max sustained wind of 115 knots. Pam is forecast to intensify further in the next 24-48 hours and max sustained wind could exceed 140 knots during that time as the cyclone slowly tracks south. Vanuatu lies in the path of greatest destruction and could be devastated if Pam’s forecast track and intensity verify. While current forecast projections do not have Pam making landfall on New Caledonia or Fiji, those areas could also be affected by destructive wind and rain. From a swell perspective, we’ll be closely monitoring Pam for solid surf along parts of Australia’s East Coast as we move through the weekend and into early next week; New Zealand should see some rare, long period N swell as we move through the weekend/early next week; there is even an outside chance that the Americas will see some southwest swell toward the end of the month after Pam transitions into an extratropical storm. Note also Tropical Storm Nathan between northern Queensland and New Guinea and developing Tropical Cyclone 3 well to the north-northeast of Fiji (upper right hand corner of this image).
