On this day in 1978, #VanHalen start their first-ever U.S. tour in Chicago as the opening act for Journey. "#DavidLeeRoth, who admits to being his own favorite groupie, was feeling particularly feisty as he and other members of Van Halen obliged a photographer with some rock-star poses in a St. Regis hotel room. Roth had just blown a paycheck on a pair of two-tone tassled loafers, which he displayed proudly; the band's 45-minute opener for Journey the night before had gone well. . . . It seemed an auspicious time to make a few pronouncements about the current state of rock & roll. 'See, today everybody's going for the real pretty look,' Roth said. 'Tasteful –– God, the word's starting to irk me. It's either that or stick a pin through you whatsis.' A bold characterization, perhaps, from a musician who only a couple of months ago was playing atop flatbed trailers in exurban Los Angeles parking lots and in subterranean Hollywood beer bars."
