Shared from @neilshea13 | Sometimes it works like this: you’re thrown together with a person you’ve never met, sent to a place you’ve never been, and expected to return with something few people have ever seen. It’s a blind date. Usually it happens in the woods. Often it goes bad. Six years ago in Ethiopia I was lucky to be tossed in with this guy, @randyolson, and since then he’s become one of my good friends. Randy is founder of @thephotosocietyand he’s been shooting @ナショナルジオグラフィック stories for some 20 years. He calls himself a generalist, rare at a time when many shooters specialize, and no one better captures such rich, subtle geometries, or more elegantly reveals the obscure forces that shape our lives. It’s also true that no one crashes a drone quite like him, or looks finer splattered with bull’s blood. Last week I caught up with Randy at a dive on the Oregon coast. We sketched out new ideas on bar napkins and wondered how much doom + gloom a story can hold before it collapses under its own weight. Seeing him reminded me of the importance of creative partnerships, which is easy to forget when I’m back east, snowbound, waiting out the fourth blizzard of the year.
