Located on the island of Hispaniola, the Dominican Republic shares the island with Haiti (one of two islands in the Caribbean, along with Saint Martin, that are shared by two different countries). Christopher Columbus landed on the island in 1492, making him the first westerner to set eyes on the local Taino people who had lived there since the 7th century. Columbus' remains were at one time buried in the capital, Santo Domingo, but were moved to Havana, Cuba and then later Seville, Spain. However, a lead box bearing the name "Don Christopher Columbus" containing bone fragments was discovered in Santo Domingo in 1877, giving rise to the notion that the incorrect remains (or only a portion of the correct remains) were transferred and he was indeed still buried in Santo Domingo. The local authorities have never allowed DNA sampling of the bones in Santo Domingo, so it will remain a mystery. If you feel like paying your respects to Don Colombus, and wanna go sit on this beautiful beach, tag someone you'd like to take to the Dominican Republic. Photo by @magnumji
