Photo by @ChrisBickford @NatGeoTravel. Upon the canals of Burano in Northern Italy floats an upside-down world of bright colors and shifting shapes, undulating in the wake of fishing-boats, gondolas, and the occasional gust of wind. Burano appears like a dream-within-a-dream to the day-tripper escaping for a few hours the gothic labyrinthine mysteries of Venice. To the faded frescoes and intricate stonework of its more famous neighbor, Burano offers a technicolor antidote, a super-saturated alter-ego, an animé re-visioning of the classic Adriatic island-city. Like Venice, however, Burano struggles with its place in the contemporary world: water pollution of the Veneto lagoon has severely damaged its small fishing industry; while the mixed blessing of tourism has created a strong local economy, but forced generations-old local families to walk the fine line between preservation of their traditions and caricaturization of their fantasy-island image. The popularity of the famed Burano lace has consigned the female population of the island to lifetime careers in hand-sewing to meet the tremendous demand; meanwhile the men are trading in their fishing-boats for gelato-shops. It's certainly not a bad life, but in the twenty-first century there's just not enough going on in this little piece of paradise to hold the young people. Nevertheless, the Buranei remain proud of their island and enjoy sharing the visual feast they enjoy every day with their guests. And depending on what sorts of places in the world you like to visit, this little island may very well become one of your all-time favorites. #burano #veneto #italy #mediterranean #adriatic @NatGeoCreative
