Though fire has been a part of ritual and performance among human cultures around the world for millennia, arguably the most dynamic and compelling fire traditions come from the Pacific Island cultures. The origins and development of the practice throughout the vast oceanic world of Polynesia, however, are essentially untraceable. Many believe that the Maori of New Zealand were the original innovators, while the Samoans are generally considered the masters of the art. Regardless, fire-dancing in the modern era has become both a tourist draw throughout the islands of Oceana, and a hippie circus practice; and like many indigenous arts, regional distinctions have been blurred, and contemporary stylings have been introduced by a new breed of enthusiasts. Still, it is impossible not to feel the primal power of a fire dance as the performers pour body and soul into a mesmerizing whirl of stomps and spins and throws. The fierce interplay of heat and sweat and drums and shifting, swirling light brings forth a deep expression of Mana, the supernatural life-force that breathes and erupts and rains and shines and flowers and breaks in beautiful, powerful waves on the shores of the Pacific Islands. #firedance #kauai #hawaii @NatGeoCreative
