Approximately 150,000 Saharawi refugees have languished in refugee camps in Tindouf, Algeria since 1976 when they fled bombardment by the Moroccan armed forces who occupied their homeland int he Western Sahara, in northwest Africa Saharawi forces and Morocco agreed to a cease fire In 1991, on condition that the United Nations would organize a referendum of the inhabitants of the region as to the status of the Western Sahara. To date the referendum has not taken place.
