Photograph by George Steinmetz @geosteinmetz A fumarole on Mt. Erebus, Antarctica turns volcanic steam into an ice tower at 3,550 meters. Heat from the volcano melts the ice below, forming caves and tunnels hidden beneath the crust. The view from up here is spectacular in -30°C, but equally amazing is what lies below the ice. For a peek inside "Sauna Cave" go to @geosteinmetz. An autographed poster of this fumarole image is available in the tiny store of McMurdo Station, or from suburban world headquarters via GeorgeSteinmetz.com #NSF#USAP #McMurdo #Antarctica
