36,000 years ago someone painted the amazing art that is in Chauvet Cave, France.

36 millennia is an incomprehensible amount of time. Yet not only have the paintings been preserved they are still a moving testament to the lives and ideas of the painters. That art's ability to communicate survives that gulf of time is an inspiration to me as a photographer. Of all the incredible things I have been able to do in my career as a National Geographic Photographer shooting the paintings in Chauvet was the most incredible. Its no wonder to me that Chauvet was listed as a world heritage site this year.
