In the American Southeast, this was the time the Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, and other Algonquians would take to the hills to hunt. Even now, despite the centuries of development and encroachment, there remain many square miles, both private and public, of forested terrain, and wandering through them on an autumn morning can give one a deep sense of serenity and a feeling that there is magic afoot.
