Photo by @chrisbickford. Mike Joyce, a native of Connemara, peers out of the half-door of a stone cottage that has been in his family for over 300 years. According to lore, the Joyce family name derives from the Breton name Judoc, meaning ‘lord’, and was introduced by the Normans into England during the invasion of 1066. It came to Ireland in 1283 through Thomas de Jorse, a Welshman of Norman descent, who married into the royal O'Brien family and settled in the territory of northern Galway. Since then, the Joyce name has been synonymous with the stretch of land bordering Galway and Mayo. The Joyces became a powerful merchant clan, and were named one of the "14 Tribes of Galway" who dominated the political, social, and economic life of Galway until the late 19th century. Even today, the borderlands of Galway and Mayo are labeled "Joyce Country" on maps of the region. Mike Joyce's family have long been purveyors of Connemara Marble, a unique green-veined marble mined in the Renvyle area of Connemara. So his Connemara roots, you might say, run very deep.
