This stretch of beach used to be populated by vacation houses with ominous names like "The Drift-Away" and "The Laundry Mat". One by one they were taken by storms. Only the distinctively pink Pelican's Perch remains. Coastal Area Management ordinances forbid oceanfront building or rebuilding in Kitty Kawk, which has left Highway 12, known commonly as "the beach road", directly exposed to the wrath of the ocean. Beach erosion and its various solutions are a perennial political topic in these parts. Meanwhile, the ocean keeps pounding away and Highway 12 has become one of the most expensive roads in the state to maintain.
