A Himalayan monal pheasant (Lophophorus impejanus) at 'Pheasant Heaven', a captive breeding center for rare galliformes in North Carolina. Though among the most beautiful birds on the planet, many species of pheasant are now in serious decline due to habitat loss and poaching.
This species (and 4,000 others to date) comprise the Photo Ark, a twenty-year effort to capture studio-quality images of every captive species on Earth. The goal is to awaken the public to the extinction crisis, and get them to care, while there's still time to save the world's biodiversity.
