#NYCSubway 81st st, Upper East Side, at the #AMNH A Galápagos tortoise peeks in the doorway as the C train heads north. This reminds me of #LonesomeGeorge, the last tortoise from Pinta Island in the Galapagos chain. Lonesome George died just a couple of years ago at the age of 102, the last of the subspecies Chelonoidis nigra abingdonii. Each of the 18 major islands from the Galápagos archipelago have some of the most well known examples of #IslandBioEvoluton. The islands are so far from one another the can share species but over time allow for enough differences to emerge between the subspecies that populate each island. Several great books have been written on the subject, “ The Beak of the Finch " winner of the #PulitzePrize by #JonathanWeiner & my favorite book about #Evolution, "The Song of the Dodo" by @DavidQuammen. I was fortunate enough to work with Quammen on a story for @natgeo, ‘Was Darwin Wrong?’. Quammen's book is focused on #AlfredRusselWallace, the world's greatest field biologist. Wallace wrote Darwin a letter, after he was inspired during a fever, about the possibility of natural selection being the vehicle that helps make evolution work. The islands were the home to #LoneSomeGeorge and are the single major location on the globe that ignited a spark and moved Darwin to write and research on the theory of Evolution, via #NaturalSelection. @RobertClarkphoto @natgeo @thephotosociety @InstituteArtist @GeorgeDante
