Photo: @melissafarlow | Horses watch a pronghorn deer head to a waterhole they share in Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge in Nevada. A helicopter roundup begins this week to remove more than 400 horses from the 575,000-acre Great Basin high desert sanctuary. They are considered feral.
Ranchers raised horses for the U.S. Cavalry in the 1920s and 1930s prior to designation of the land as a refuge. Descendants of those horses make up the herd as well as other horses turned loose and left to survive on the rough terrain.
Last year Sheldon rounded up and removed half of the 800 horses and 90 burros citing they are the cause of significant damage to the landscape. Litigation recently ended when the Fish and Wildlife Service severed ties with a contractor after most of 140 horses could not be accounted for following last years roundup. Fearing sales for slaughter, horse advocates are scrambling to adopt and find homes for the horses and burros. @thephotosociety @wildhorsephotos #horse #horses #deer #nevada #wild
