Japan’s Nuclear Power Plant Belt: This is a series of the coverage for its rural areas that contain nuclear reactors. Although all of them are suspended in terms of the operation after the 2011 Fukushima disaster, the Japanese government wants to resume at least some of them. The image: Staffers of a summer store at Crystal Beach in Mihama pose in front of it. They are part of rare local people who I met here. Most I met in the beach were outsiders, people from other prefectures – (those in the last three images are also not locals, but from Mie, Gifu and Aichi prefectures – I forgot to mention). Crystal Beach, Suisho-Hama in Japanese, is one of the most famous in Japan, despite the fact three nuke reactors are located nearby. Yet, since 2011, less people come. Some of beach-related summer jobs in the area were closed. Indeed, the region, called as Tsuruga in Fukui prefecture, has faced the drastic depopulation and the shrinking of job market for so long time. That was one of the biggest reasons why nuke reactors were created here.
