Photo: @joannapinneo Sol y Sombra. Ernest Hemingway attended San Fermin many times between 1923 and 1959 and met a number of famous bullfighters of the day. Hemingway’s novel, The Sun Also Rises, played a big part in the festival’s international fame. Recently the NY Times reported on a new edition of his 1926 classic being released by Scribner this month that includes earlier drafts, a discarded first chapter and new photos. In a 1932 review of Hemingway’s book, Death In the Afternoon in the NY Times the reviewer writes, “The "true enjoyment" of the fan or "aficionado" is in the bravery or "nobility" of the bull and in the skill and bravery of the matador. At least these are the points upon which Mr. Hemingway dwells.” It must be noted that the bullfights during San Fermin are different than other bullfights in Spain or elsewhere. The bullfights are organized by the “Casa de Misericordia” (a home for elders) to provide money to help run this residence for the poor and aged. These are the only bullfights that take place in Pamplona.
