In the desert of Saudi Arabia, A
a fallen locomotive once pulled pilgrims on the Hejaz Railway, built by Ottoman Turks. Tribesmen led by Lawrence of Arabia regularly attacked Hejaz trains during World War I.

July 1 heralds the arrival of Part II of the Out of Eden project, this latest installment is on Saudi Arabia where Paul Salopek and I traveled throughout the Hejaz region last October/November. Story is aptly titled "The Wells of Memory". There's an extended photo essay of my work on this page.
Also, my friend and Nat Geo colleague, Paul Salopek, has a Kickstarter project to help support Paul's footsteps on the @OutofEdenWalk project through Central Asia and the Silk Road. I'm also donating a number of special prints as rewards. Please visit, support and share this link widely, thank you.
All my best, John
