#tbt 2012-05-26 08.12.53 Two years ago I met an Indian team descending from the summit of Everest. They had climbed through the night, reaching the summit in the pre dawn cold. As they inched their way down under the guidance of a few watchful Sherpa, I moved up. I was as alone as one can be on the standard route of Everest.
The previous day our team was successful. Dawa Jangzum Sherpa and @エミリー・ハリントン , both on their first expedition , climbed together and made the summit. We sampled rock for the geology profile and no one was injured. Exhausted after 8 weeks of life at altitude, I chose not to go to the summit. About eight in he evening the weather settled into a deep calm and my motivation bounced back. My dream of climbing Chomolungma with out supplemental gas was with in reach. I left at one in the morning, to avoid the crowds and enjoy the benefit of a calm warm day. I celebrated on the summit with Dave Hahn.
Regardless of the commercial nature of Everest in the 21st century, it still is a mountain. By climbing it on the terms of the mountain we get much more out of the experience. Is taking a helicopter over the Khumbu icefall a legitimate ascent? Should you be climbing the mountain if you need 9 cylinders of gas on summit day?
