#tbt Ankaji Sherpa (Makalu) strolling in to Everest base camp on the 19th of May 2012. My friend @phil_henderson greets him after the first successful ascent of 2102. He led the Sherpa team fixing rope from the Balcony to the summit. As integral part of the 2012 Everest expedition we became fast friends. On the 18th of April 2014 Ankaji was killed by the devastating ice avalanche in the Khumbu Ice Fall. He was carrying loads up through this very dangerous section of the South Col route. As a senior instructor for @khumbuclimbingcenter he was always sharing his knowledge and expertise. He was mentoring a group of younger Sherpa at the time of his death. While we debate the morality of hiring people to do dangerous work, be it mining diamonds, stripping apart toxic E waste or assisting climbers in the Himalaya, the family and Sherpa community is trying to make sense and find balance amidst the chaos. Having built my career on ascents of Everest I am personally indebted to the Sherpa, Tibetan and Nepali people that have made my aspirations possible. In 2003 @jenniloweanker and I founded the @khumbuclimbingcenter, a vocational training program for high altitude workers. I would like to think we have made a difference, yet in light of this season it's a hard question with no easy answer. To help out with the relief effort a group of photographers have donated prints. The photography is top drawer (this snapshot is not one of them) and can be found via the link on my profile. This is day two of a week long sale. Please consider a contribution. Thanks. @maxwellsilver @earthvisiontrust @pedromcbride @renan_ozturk @jimmy_chin @graysonwyatt @gordonwiltsie @coryrichards @andy_bardon http://www.sherpasfund.org
