#tbt 12 years ago in May and June Galen Rowell, Rick Ridgeway, @ジミー・チン and I walked 270 miles (400 kilometers) across the Tien Shan. Located in Tibet, north of the Himalaya and south of the Taklimakan desert, this high altitude plain is home to the endangered #chiru. Sought after for it's wool and the horns of the male, these diminutive animals have been hunted to the brink of extinction. The goal of our expedition was to identify and map the western calving grounds for @ナショナルジオグラフィック and the venerable wildlife biologist George Schaller. In the course of our seven week expedition we dodged bribe thirsty authorities, had wolves track us, struggled with the cold and enjoyed a daily challenge of finding water. In this photo by the late Galen Rowell, Jimmy and I savor a break in the lee of our carts. To this day, our trek remains one of my most cherished experiences. Seeing Galen mentor Jimmy, drafting Rick's wisdom and running low on food are all highlights of this humbling experience. If this piques your interest look up Rick's book, The Big Open. @ザ・ノースフェイス
