#tbt 20 years ago in the austral summer of '94 John Middendorf and I climbed Cerro Torre, a slender granite spire in Argentine Patagonia, via the Compressor Route. This #fromwhereistand shot by John is looking down the first pitch of the summit headwall. The route was climbed by Cesare Maestri and team in '70. Festooned with bolts installed by a gasoline powered drill, the route was a turning point in climbing and brought the ethic of fair means into the lexicon of alpine climbing. In '12 Hayden Kennedy and @jason_kruk climbed the route with out the use of the bolts and then pulled a few out on the way down. It was, to say the least, a wee bit controversial. Five days later @davidlama_official free climbed the route, which indicates the direction alpine climbing is heading. Cerro Torre once again became a fulcrum in the debate of how we enjoy the mountains. While John and I got lucky with the weather and sent the rig, there was a sense that somehow we had not climbed the route. So back to the #bucketlist the Torre goes. I've got to go back and enjoy another windy #beatdown.
