My Hometown Osaka – Kamagasaki series: 73 year old homeless man Tani keeps looking onto a broken clock, as he suffers with Altzheimer. Kamagasaki is the biggest slum in Japan. 20,000 to 30, 000 manual workers, many of them homeless people, live within less than 1 km². Such workers were demanded in the 1960s to 1980s to make Japan’s economy grow further. But due to the long economic recession for more than two decades and their aging, most of them cannot find their day-jobs now and live in very harsh, often unhealthy conditions. But their situation has been continuously neglected by the authorities, or even exploited by Yakuza and corrupted entities. I would like to share this series with you, as the issue is not only in Osaka, but also everywhere in the world, surely including my another hometown New York.
