#wwbchristmascontest3rdround finalist @alainaandersen about her nutcracker : Last Christmas was a very difficult one for my family. My little sister was diagnosed with a serious case of anorexia nervosa. She was hospitalized on December 20th, and was on strict bed rest for a whole week. Since trees weren't allowed in the hospital, my other siblings and I decorated a small, paper one and hung it on the wall of her hospital room. My parents, brother, sister, grandparents, and pastor all crowded in on Christmas morning to open presents, trying our best to stay cheery. But it was utterly impossible to get into the holiday spirit while our loved one was suffering. My parents had promised to take us to see Milwaukee Ballet's The Nutcracker that night, and they didn't want to neglect their healthy children. So with heavy hearts, we left our sister with her grandma to watch the performance. Seeing the glittering snowflakes, malicious rat king, outrageous jacks, and the picturesque sugar plum was exactly what we needed. The magic of the production brought back the joy of Christmas and gave us hope for the well being of my sister. Watching the happy dancers float around the stage temporarily made everything alright. I don't know how we would have gotten through Christmas without the true magic of the Nutcracker.
