When I was 12 I was the biggest tom boy. I wore boy clothes and shied away from anything girly. At the time I was still very serious about ballet but tried to act like I didn't like it because it was a very girly sport. During the Christmas season I auditioned for the Nutcracker with Spindle City Ballet, whom I danced for year round. After the dancing part of the audition they had us do some acting and see how well we could perform a certain character. They paired us up, taught us choreography and told me to play Fritz, Clara's brother. We were rehearsing bits and pieces from the party scene, specifically when Fritz breaks the Nutcracker. When my partner and I got up to do the scene we nailed it and made the director laugh like I had never seen before. I was almost certain that I landed the role of Fritz ( because sometimes girls had to play party boy roles) and couldn't be happier, Fritz fit my personality perfectly. Two weeks later when the casting went up I was given the role of Clara. I was completely dumbfounded. I was so shocked, happy, excited and really nervous ! That Christmas/ Nutcracker season ended up being one of the happiest times of my life. Although I had to act very girly and wear a dress my experience as playing the role of Clara was absolutely amazing. It was my first big role and I Remember feeling so special when little girls came up to me after the show asking for pictures and autographs.
