I wanted to share a special experience that I had while performing 'The Nutcracker' at the Royal Balletschool of Antwerp. In the weeks leading up to the performance, I was extremely nervous and worried about executing the technique the way the Sugar Plum Fairy would: perfectly. I was so scared that I would come offstage disappointed, and the fact that the Princess of Belgium was attending was also weighing on my mind! Before I went onstage, my teacher told me to let go and to simply focus on bringing the spirit of the character into the audience's hearts. With that as my guide, I felt relaxed and was able to enjoy my time onstage and I really felt that I was living in the world of this ballet. After the show, I got to meet Princess Mathilde and her daughter, who was just starting ballet classes. The little girl said she was inspired by the performance and that she wanted to dance like me. At that point, I thought "This is why I work so hard everyday..." I realized that all my worrying about only technique was for naught, because our art is not only about technique; it is about striving to touch our audience, inspiring them, and sharing what we love to do. I have carried that lesson with me and will never forget it.
