2003 SPLA Nuer tribesmen show off one of their heavy machine guns on the front lines near Kansuk, Sudan. I was there during the US invasion of Iraq. Across South Sudan that week people would ask me if when the US was finished with Iraq would they come and sort out the Bashir government in the north? I would always say "I think finishing in Iraq will take a lot longer than most people imagine."
