In this archival picture from one of my scarier projects, acclaimed mountaineer and writer Greg Child - on assignment for National Geographic Magazine - ascends a rope 3,000 feet above the ground during the first ascent of the overhanging north face of Great Sail Peak on Canada's Baffin Island. This route was north of the Arctic Circle and was so difficult that it took more than a month to complete, much of the time with rocks and ice chunks whistling down from above. Also on the team were Jared Ogden, Mark Synnott, Nat Geo videographer John Catto, and late mountaineering legend, Alex Lowe.
