One challenge of expedition photography is that it's participatory. You have to be part of the team and do your share of the work, including carrying huge loads to the base of climbs. On this day - while covering a Nat Geo-sponsored big wall climb on Baffin Island, Canada - the weather was dark and drizzling in base camp and I considered saving weight by leaving my camera behind. Only a thousand feet higher did I discover a picture where there might otherwise have been a very disappointing mistake. In almost two months on the cliffs above, such a scene never repeated itself.
