As I pack for the upcoming American Alpine Club meeting, I'm flashing back to one of my earliest published pictures. Notice the wool knickers and sweaters, home-knitted hats, finger-searing tin cup, leather boots, crude sleeping pad and more. Even campfires are banned most places today. I would, of course, have suffered terribly on most of my more recent expeditions without far more sophisticated gear and clothing, but it has been fascinating to watch the evolution.
