Shortly after flying over the South Pole in 1929, explorer Richard Byrd named this 10,000-foot mountain - which is just 300 miles from the Pole - after Norman Vaughan, who had dropped out of Harvard to become the expedition's chief dog musher. Here, after a lifetime dreaming of climbing it, Norman finally approaches the summit, just one day shy of his 90th birthday. That evening, as we camped atop the mountain, we tried to light that many sparklers atop his "cake," but howling winds kept blowing them out.
