Photo by @stevewinterphoto. This is one of my favorite photos from my #NatGeo #Irrawaddy River story from the May 2006 issue. This photo was taken in Pyay, #Myanmar during a Nat (Burmese spirit) festival during which mediums, called nat kadaws, embody a nat's spirit. The role of a nat kadaw, or "nat lady", was traditionally passed on from mother to daughter, but that began to change in the 1980s when men dressed as women started performing these roles, as is seen here.@ナショナルジオグラフィック
