Temple of Zeus on sits atop a plateau at Cyrene, Libya, with a sweeping view of the Mediterranean. Founded in the 7th Century BC as a Greek center of learning, it was later absorbed into the Roman Empire. Cyrene was destroyed by a series of earthquakes, beginning in 3rd Century AD. The Greco-Roman sites of Libya were largely neglected by Gaddafi, and much of Cyrene remains un-excavated. The photo was not published in the 2.2013 edition of NGM. @ナショナルジオグラフィック @geosteinmetz
