ALEX LOWE BAT-HOOKING ON GREAT SAIL PEAK, BAFFIN ISLAND, CANADA

This unpublished photo from an NGM assignment I shot on Canada's Baffin Island helps to illustrate an answer a question I am commonly asked: "Don't you get scared up there?" Heck yes. Who in their right mind wouldn't? The only thing that keep me from freaking out, in fact, is my camera. Instead of getting transfixed staring between my feet at the ground 1,000+ meters below, I keep my eyes peeled through the viewfinder. The simple act of framing things and trying to communicate how I feel about the scene helps me to turn my fear into an abstraction that I can channel into an image rather than visceral panic.
The one who should have been scared here (but probably was not) was my subject, the late and legendary mountaineer Alex Lowe. Just for the picture, he led this incredibly difficult pitch twice (after fixing a rope for me. ) The climbing was just as tricky the second time around - so delicate and run out that it seemed as if he so much as sneezed he could have fallen 300 feet or more. Worse, to get the right angle, I was hanging on a rope off to the side, jumping as far off the cliff as I could manage to keep my own accursed shadow out of the frame. I constantly worried that I would careen into him.
