Zainabu Cisse, the second wife of Mohammed Cisse, had feet covered in henna for a relative's wedding last Thursday in Bamako, Mali. Her husband, his first wife, and their seven children fled from Goumndaum, a town near Timbuktu in northern Mali when Islamist separatists took power last April. She took a boat, and then a bus, to get to Bamako. Her family is now three months behind on rent in their small apartment and though a French military intervention is reclaiming much territory, the Cisses fear ongoing instability as well as reprisals and aren't ready to head home yet.
