🦇 Sink your teeth into spooky season with the common vampire bat (Desmodus rotundus). This species feeds exclusively on the blood of other animals, puncturing flesh with a relatively painless bite. An anticoagulant—called draculin—in this bat’s saliva keeps blood flowing while it drinks. This social species can be found in colonies of thousands of individuals. It inhabits parts of Central and South America.
