It’s Fossil Friday, but did you know that it’s also International Sloth Day? To celebrate, meet Glossotherium robustum—“the tongue beast!” This massive mammal roamed the pampas of Argentina, a grassland region, some 30,000 years ago during the Pleistocene. Small bones embedded in its skin served as a coat of armor for this giant sloth. As a mylodont sloth, it also had more complex teeth than those of other groups of ground sloths. See this specimen up close in the Museum’s Hall of Primitive Mammals!
