Painted in 1918, Kees van Dongen's 'La Quiétude' is mesmeric, a fantasy of colour and life, a reverie made real.
Against a steel-grey ground, two figures lie entwined, their bright bodies painted midnight blue and siren red. Around them is an entire menagerie: twinned songbirds, a drowsy dog, a monkey.
Van Dongen employed a riotous blend of bright pigments to create works of stunning chromatic vigour that challenged the possibilities of colour.
